Neurosciences, Neurolinguistics and applications

Joint* Postgraduate Programme of Studies of AUTh's School of Medicine

* The School of Italian Language and Literature of AUTh also participates in the programme

Programme

The general aim of the Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Program “Neuroscience, Neurolinguistics, and Applications” is to train scientists specialized in the study of language from the perspective of neuroscience, i.e., as a brain function. It promotes the education of these scientists in modern neuroimaging methods for studying language and provides them with up-to-date knowledge about neurological and genetic causes of language disorders. At the same time, it trains them in clinical and educational methods for the rehabilitation of language disorders. Therefore, it seeks to enhance the quality of speech therapy and rehabilitation services by educating professionals in these services from a neuroscience perspective.

FAQ

The number of students admitted each year is set at a maximum of thirty (30) postgraduate students. The program cannot operate with fewer than ten (10) postgraduate students.

The selection process for candidates is conducted by a designated Three-Member Selection and Examination Committee, appointed by the Special Committee (S.E.), and is composed of faculty members who are involved in postgraduate work.

The object of the Postgraduate Program “Neuroscience, Neurolinguistics, and Applications” is the promotion of interdisciplinary postgraduate education and research, the advancement of knowledge, and the provision of high-level education both in theory and practical training. The program focuses on the theoretical and practical training of young scientists, providing them with comprehensive knowledge in neuroscience, particularly in neurolinguistics and the practical applications of rehabilitation and intervention in language and its disorders. The curriculum covers issues related to the cognitive neuroscience of language, neurorehabilitation, language disorders, along with their corresponding clinical and educational applications.

The purpose of the postgraduate program “Neuroscience, Neurolinguistics, and Applications” is to train scientists specialized in the study of language from the perspective of neuroscience, specifically as a brain function. It promotes the education of these scientists in modern neuroimaging methods for language study and provides them with current knowledge on neurological and genetic causes of language disorders, while also training them in clinical and educational methods for rehabilitating language disorders. As a result, the program aims to enhance the quality of speech therapy and rehabilitation services by educating professionals in these fields through the lens of neuroscience.

The Postgraduate Program “Neuroscience, Neurolinguistics, and Applications” is credited with a total of 120 ECTS, in accordance with the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System. It includes a unified curriculum and is structured over four (4) academic semesters.

In the 1st semester, four (4) compulsory courses are taught, each worth 7.5 ECTS.

In the 2nd semester, four (4) elective courses are offered, each worth 7.5 ECTS.

In the 3rd semester, students in Specialization I: Cognitive Neuroscience of Language and Neurorehabilitation are required to complete a mandatory internship of 250 hours, worth 10 ECTS, while students in Specialization II: Language Disorders and Clinical/Educational Applications must complete an internship of 500 hours, worth 20 ECTS, in host institutions, depending on their chosen specialization. Additionally, students in Specialization I must choose one of the two offered elective courses, each worth 10 ECTS. During the 3rd semester, students from both specializations are also required to complete the literature review and research plan for the Master’s Thesis Part I, worth 10 ECTS.

In the 4th semester, students from both specializations must complete, write, and present their Master’s Thesis, worth 20 ECTS, and select one elective course from the two available, each worth 10 ECTS.

*Courses will be conducted 70% through distance learning.

The postgraduate program includes tuition fees set at three thousand euros (€3,000) for each study cycle. The payment is made by the student (or by a third party on behalf of the student) to a specific account of the Special Research Fund (E.L.K.E.).

Tuition fees are paid into the Special Account for Research Funds of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (A.U.Th.). Failure to meet financial obligations is sufficient grounds for withholding the degree or even for dismissal from the program.

The tuition fees are to be paid in three equal installments, the first upon enrollment, the second before the start of the 2nd semester and the third before the start of the 3rd semester, into a bank account held for this purpose by the Special Account for Research Funds of A.U.Th.
